Wear Pond – Writtle Green

On 6th April a group of volunteers from the parish council clad in waders and wellies descended on Wear Pond to clear debris and cut back brambles.  Leaves and twigs, rubbish including a full plastic bag of bread were removed from the pond.  We managed to clear a full skip load.  The statue of Godfrey the goose has once again been uncovered on the island.  The island has been mainly left undisturbed as there are ducks nesting on it and the brambles provide some protection for the nests.  Thanks to the D & B Scaffolding Ltd who arranged the skip.

Barley Straw Bags Wear Pond, Writtle

Bags of barley straw have also been distributed in the pond.  These are designed to sink and break down in the water.  The barley straw helps to inhibit the new growth of algae.  We would like to remind visitors again please do not feed the ducks bread or leave any food surrounding the pond as it encourages non welcome wildlife (rats).
