Lauretta Fox the Clerk and Justine Atterbury the Assistant Clerk met with Hettie, Annabel, Parker and Reuben, Year 5 from Writtle Junior School to discuss the declining hedgehog population and what we could do to help prevent this.

The One in a Quillion project group gave a very professional presentation on hedgehogs.  Hedgehogs are in decline.  One third of urban hedgehogs have been lost due to accidents on the roads or loss of habitat or their routes being blocked.  The group asked the Parish Council to help to get the message out to Writtle residents about how they can help stop the decline.

They outlined how residents can help to encourage more hedgehogs.  This included putting up signs to warn drivers that hedgehogs may be crossing and asking them to slow down.  Additionally residents can help by cutting a small hole 13cm to allow the hedgehogs to travel from garden to garden.

We agreed that the Parish Council would place their information posters on our noticeboards and in the library.  We also agreed to share a short article that they would write on the website, and in the next edition of Writtle News.  We suggested that they could ask local residents to put up the hedgehog warning signs in their front gardens to warn drivers.

The group asked whether we would consider putting up a hedgehog home.  We suggested that this may be a possibility at the allotment sites.  We agreed to consider this at the next Environment Committee Meeting.

School Poster Hedgehog

Speed matters.  It matters to Writtle Parish Council and we know that it matters to you too.  Essex County Council are consulting on the Essex Safer Speeds Strategy.  Not another consultation! Why does it matter to me?!

Essex County Council are proposing for local communities to have far more say in setting speed limits.  You can help by responding to the consultation to say YES we do want a local say, we know our local roads and safety matters to us.  If we are able to show support, we are more likely to have the opportunity to influence speed limits in Writtle.

Writtle Parish Council Highways Committee working closely with Essex Highways has meant a much-needed repair, to a well-used footpath in the village has been achieved.  The path connecting Ongar Road to Little Meadow has now been repaired.
